SUMMARY:Flying Solo with Jo Hoffberg
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland Balboa Club is proud to present FLYING SOLO WITH JO HOFFBERG in CLEVELAND June 2026. \n40 dancers. 13 hours. One weekend that’s going to change how you move. Flying Solo is a weekend intensive for dancers who sense that there’s something bigger underneath the steps they’ve been collecting — and they’re right. \nThis isn’t figure-by-figure memorization. It’s learning how movement fits together: thinking about jazz steps as rhythms (instead of moves) in order to train more efficiently\, how to scaffold your own learning so new material actually sticks\, and how to build a practice that makes you better when nobody’s watching. We’ll use swing music and vernacular jazz shapes\, but we’ll also dance to r&b\, disco\, funk\, and house — because it all comes from the same tradition\, and if you can dance\, you can dance to any of it. \nYou’ll work on rhythm\, bounce\, body awareness\, arms\, musicality\, and improvisation – broken into layers you can actually practice on your own. By Sunday\, you won’t just know more things. You’ll understand how your body works\, how to chunk information instead of drowning in it\, and how to close the gap between the dancer you are right now and the dancer you want to be. \nJo Hoffberg has run Flying Solo in San Francisco\, Chicago\, Philadelphia\, Boulder\, NYC\, Berlin\, Munich\, and Wrocław. 92% of students say they’d do it again. 42% say it was worth more than they paid. Multiple editions have sold out. Dancers regularly travel from other cities to attend. \nOpen to All Levels (aimed at Intermediate and up). Brave beginners welcome. Register Here! \nOne of many fun and community focused dance events brought to you by the Cleveland Balboa Club. Want more dance goodness in your life? Check out other upcoming events\, including weekly lessons and Cleveland Swing Thing weekend dance workshops.

SUMMARY:Lindy Hop Lesson Series - April and May 2026
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to partner with Dani Dowler\, a fabulous dancer\, as well as the Shaker Heights community to announce a Lindy Hop lessons series. Sign up here:\n\nhttps://shakerheights.recdesk.com/Commu…/Program/Detail…\n\nThis class will introduce you to Lindy Hop\, a wonderful swing dance that emerged from Harlem in the 1920s and took the world by storm. Students will be introduced to basic footwork\, rhythms\, and patterns with a focus on connection\, musicality\, and community. This will be a progressive class\, with each week building on the one before. Dancers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and get ready to have a great time!\n\nThis course is being offered on Fridays at 11:30 am from April 10 through May 15\, 2026. Cost is $50 for Shaker Heights residents and $75 for non-residents.\n\nDani Dowler started her movement journey in gymnastics because her mom figured if she was going to flip off the living room couch\, she might as well do it safely. Since then\, her love of movement has only grown – from competitive dance and gymnastics\, to cross-country\, to pole vault and high jump\, to dancing in the kitchen while cooking and taking nature ‘hikes’ with her nephews. She discovered swing dancing in 2006 in Cleveland and hasn’t looked back. She has a particular fondness for all things solo jazz\, Charleston\, and Lindy Hop; but mostly just enjoys exploring ways to move and groove with swing music. With a BA and MFA in dance\, 30ish years of performing experience\, and 20ish years of teaching experience\, Dani is passionate about bringing excitement\, honesty\, expression\, and body awareness to every class she teaches\, no matter the dance style.

Amidst a booming Jazz age\, young adults answered the question\, how do we move and express ourselves when we don’t have any space on the dance floor. This class is for brand spanking-new dancers\, new-to-swing dancers\, and beginner to intermediate level balboa dancers\, and will focus on communication\, connection\, and rhythm. Topics will cover basic steps\, foundational rhythms\, and some fun ways to groove along to high tempo swing music

SUMMARY:FUNdamentals of Balboa - FREE LESSON
DESCRIPTION:This free beginner-friendly introduction to balboa dancing will be great for new dancers or those looking to fine tune some basic skills. Come see if balboa is for you! No experience or partner required. Dancers are encouraged to wear shoes that provide little to no traction on the dance floor.\n\n\nSign up here by following the tabs for Winter 2025 > Adult Programing > Swing Dancing\nhttps://clvhts.activityreg.com/selectactivity_t2.wcs\n\n\nBalboa is a partnered swing dance\, born from the thriving multi-cultural community of southern California in the 1920s. Amidst a booming Jazz age\, young adults in the balboa peninsula answered the question\, how do we move and express ourselves when we don’t have any space on the dance floor? With fast-paced swing music and multiple cultures mixing together\, balboa over time grew to incorporate two dances: pure bal\, with its characteristic chest-to-chest posture\, fast feet\, and rotational movement\, as well as bal swing\, where partners break away from each other for exciting spins\, twists\, and flare.
